The Future of Work

“A bullshit job is a job which is so pointless, or even pernicious, that even the person doing the job secretly believes that it shouldn’t exist.” ~ David Graeber
In 1930, economist John Maynard Keynes foresaw a future where technological advancements and rising standards of living would drastically reduce the working week to just 15 hours, freeing up time for leisure and personal pursuits. Today, we find ourselves in the most prosperous era in human history, yet the anticipated reduction in working hours and the rise of leisure time have not materialised, well ok we can argue Ai will now change all of this. However, A report comparing U.S. employment over the last century shows that while industries and farming sectors have shrunk, the number of people working in professional, managerial, clerical, sales and service roles has tripled from 25% to 75% of total employment.
Keynes predicted that many productive jobs would be automated, which they have. However, rather than embracing shorter working hours to focus on personal projects and passions, the administrative sector has exploded, giving rise to entire new industries like financial services, telemarketing, corporate law, academic and health administration, human resources and public relations. These roles, while necessary in some cases, often lack meaningful contributions to society, leading to the creation of what we now call “bullshit jobs.”
“The thought occurred to me that if one wanted to crush and destroy a man entirely, to mete out to him the most terrible punishment… all one would have to do would be to make him do work that was completely and utterly devoid of usefulness and meaning.”
— Fyodor Dostoyevsky, The House of the Dead
The Crisis of Fulfilment in the Workforce
The disconnection between work and meaning has reached alarming levels. A poll in the United Kingdom found that 37% of people felt their job was “utterly useless,” offering no meaningful contribution to the world and 33% reported they found no personal fulfilment in their work. A survey by the Harvard Business Review of 12,000 professionals revealed that half of respondents felt their jobs lacked “meaning and significance,” with an equal number unable to relate to their company’s mission. Another global poll of 230,000 employees across 142 countries showed that only 13% of workers genuinely enjoyed their jobs.
Despite the wealth of talent, creativity and potential within the global workforce, traditional organisational structures often fail to inspire motivation and prevent individuals from tapping into their full potential. Workers are bogged down by administrative tasks, lack of autonomy and rigid systems that limit their ability to innovate.
Rethinking Work and Innovation
If we are to truly unlock the vast human capacity for innovation, we must radically rethink the way people work together and redefine what “work” truly means. The traditional model of employment where individuals are confined to narrow roles within a hierarchical structure does not serve the needs of a world that thrives on creativity, flexibility and collaboration.
This is where rLoop comes in. We are working to break free from the outdated models of work by embracing a decentralised approach that empowers individuals to contribute to meaningful projects without being constrained by traditional corporate structures. At rLoop, we believe that by fostering a collaborative and transparent ecosystem, we can break down the barriers that stifle innovation and unleash the full potential of people across the globe.
rLoop: Empowering Human Innovation
